Do you need credit to get the Discover it Student cards?

No, you don’t necessarily need any credit to receive the Discover it Student cards. The Discover it Student cards (both the Discover it Student Chrome and Cashback) are made for students bearing low to no credit scores. You only need to be a U.S student, 18 years or older, have a Social Security number, have enough income to afford a credit card, not have too many credit inquires, and have a decent credit history if you do have one.

What’s the difference between the Discover it Student Cash Back and Chrome card?

Discover offers two cards targeted towards students: the Discover it Student Cash Back and the Discover it Chrome card. The Discover it Student Cash Back card offers 5% cash back on rotating categories for up to $1,500, and unlimited 1% on all other purchases. The Discover it Chrome card has 2% cash back on gas and restaurants on first $1000 spent per quarter, and unlimited 1% on everything else. Both cards offer an annual $20 good student reward for having a 3.0 GPA or above. Further, both cards have no annual fee and match all your cash back at the end of the first year.

Which Discover it Student card is better for me?

The Discover it Chrome card is more oriented for students who own a car and enjoy dining out due to its 2% cash back on gas and at restaurants. The Discover it Student Cash Back card, however, is more rounded as it has alternating categories and places where you can earn up to 5% cashback. While both cards would be great for a student who shops at a variety of places and owns a car, choosing one card is a more logical move. As a student, you are not as likely to get both cards as you may not have a sufficient credit score to fulfill that desire. By knowing what types of students both cards are oriented towards, you should choose accordingly to the one that matches your needs and situation the most. Both are better in their own realm but can not be compared equally as it’s like comparing apples to oranges.

Why was I rejected for the Discover it Student Chrome or Cashback card?

You can be rejected for either the Discover it Student Chrome or Cashback card because you may not satisfy their requirements. For example, if you fail to meet the requirement of not bearing enough income to afford a credit line of $500, you will be rejected. Discover it specifically tells you as to why they rejected you via paper mail, a few days after your rejection. So even if you do get rejected, you will have the opportunity to learn how to better improve your chances of owning a Discover it Student card.

Is getting your own credit card as a student worth it?

If you want to be able to finance big purchases in the future, such as a home or car then you may want to highly consider starting early by owning a credit card. Credit scores are being used more and more as a measure of your creditworthiness, which owning a credit card can establish and help improve. The sooner you’re able to get started with building credit, the sooner you will be able to take advantage of having a credit score. Your credit score will be asked of you when you want to rent out your own place after graduation or when you want to open up a cellphone contract. Even for the furniture that you may not have the cash on hand to finance, your credit score will first be checked. Many aspects of your adult life will look for your credit score before allowing you access to loans, contracts, agreements, and much more.

In short, it’s a great idea to get started with your own credit card as a student since you will be better armed to start off living independently. It is important, however, that as a student you practice responsible credit card usage and learn the ropes early so you don’t sacrifice your future to paying off credit card debt. Lastly, this card offers cashback and so you can receive a great amount of money for spending as you usually do. Best of all, you can take advantage of being a student and your good grades through owning a Discover it Student card as you will receive a $20 yearly reward for a GPA of 3.0 or above.
