Discover It Miles are worth 1 cent each, so you will need 100 Discover It Miles for $1 of flight value. Depending on how much a specific flight costs, the number of miles you need to cover a flight will vary, as it will be more expensive for international flights, than domestic ones.

Discover It Miles card

The Discover It Miles card offers a flat rate of 1.5 miles per dollar spent. This is the equivalent of 1.5 cents per dollar spent, providing a relatively normal 1.5% cash back flat rate value at no annual cost. Although these rewards aren’t relatively high, the flat rate allows you to spend without worrying about categories and other complications. Also, for the first year, Discover will match the number of miles you earn, meaning that if you earn 50,000 miles, this number will double.

Miles needed

It isn’t necessarily possible to declare a number of miles needed to purchase a flight, considering that flight prices change constantly. However, if you are attempting to purchase a flight for a $300 round trip, this is the equivalent of 30,000 miles, meaning you have to make $20,000 of purchases in order to earn that number. However, since Discover matches your miles for the first year, we recommend you spend as much money as you can during this period to maximize your rewards. For this same $300 round trip, you will only need to spend $10,000 in purchases the first year to earn enough miles to cover the cost of the trip, making it crucial that you spend money early on.

Miles can be redeemed in a variety of ways aside from flights. For example, you can redeem your Discover It Miles for hotels, tours, car rentals, cruises, and other travel-related purchases. Regardless of how you redeem your miles, each mile will still be worth 1 cent.

Conclusion

It is difficult to say how many miles you need for a flight because flight prices vary, and some flights, such as international, are more expensive than others. However, it is useful to know that each mile is 1 cent, and the Discover It Miles card offers 1.5x miles per $1 spent, allowing you to calculate how many miles you would need per flight.
