Every credit card has different benefits and costs, allowing them to be appropriate for anyone.  Each person has unique spending habits and can benefit from these cards in different ways.  If your spending habits, credit score, or income change, then the appropriate card will change as well.  When this happens, you will need to know how to either upgrade or downgrade with American Express.

What are the benefits of the Amex green card?

The American Express Green Card is very rewarding if used right.  Understanding the rewards that it offers is essential to getting the most out of your card.  First, 3x rewards are earned on every restaurant worldwide.  Additionally, 3x points can be earned on all forms of transit, including rideshare services.  Lastly, 3x points are also earned on travel, including flights, rental cars, and hotels.  These benefits make it so the card is great for people who are always on the go and traveling.  Currently, they are offering a bonus of 45,000 points if you spend $2,000 in your first three months.  This is only a limited time offer, so it is important to check their website to stay up to date on all offers.  If these rewards would benefit you from your spending habits, then upgrading may be right for you.

What will it cost to upgrade an Amex card?

Going along with the theme of the rewards program, the Amex Green Card also has no foreign transaction fees (FTF’s).  Not having to pay these FTF’s is very beneficial when traveling internationally because most credit cards do have one.  Also, the payment plan features flexible purchases and allows you to earn points even when going over your spending limit.  The APR for this account is 15.24% - 22.24% variable, depending on both your creditworthiness and when the account is opened.  If you plan on making cash advances, the APR is 25.24% and will change based on the Prime Rate.  There is also a 5% or $10 fee, depending on which is greater, for cash advances.  Lastly, there is an annual membership fee of $150.  After understanding these costs, the Amex Green Card will still be very beneficial if it is used in the right places.

How to upgrade cards with American Express?

The best way to upgrade or downgrade your Amex card is by requesting to do so either over the phone or online.  There also may be bonus points available for upgrading your card, but this can vary depending on what offers are available.  This will be available to view after logging in to your account.  If you have held your current card for less than 13 months, you will not be eligible for an upgrade and will have to either wait or apply for a new account.
