You walk into your favorite coffee shop to buy your favorite drink. When you come to the cashier and pay with your new credit card, your payment gets declined. The problem? The coffee shop doesn’t accept your new credit card, and you have to retrieve one of your other credit cards to pay!

At thousands of merchants around the world, certain credit cards aren’t accepted and cardholders must use one of their other cards instead. This begs the question: why do some merchants reject certain credit cards?

Why aren’t my credit cards accepted at certain stores?

When you pay for a good with your credit card, the store has to pay a processing fee associated with the credit card. Each credit card has different processing fees, so some stores may only accept credit cards with low processing fees.

This is also why some stores don’t accept credit cards at all! They want to avoid processing fees so that they generate more revenue from each purchase.

Where are my credit cards accepted?

To check where your credit cards are accepted, you can usually check the store website and read through the terms. To give an example, Costco only accepts Visa cards and doesn’t accept Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. Meanwhile, other wholesale stores like Sam’s Club and Walmart accept all popular credit cards.

When traveling around the world, the most widely accepted credit cards are usually Visa or Mastercard. So, avid travelers should be sure to keep an accepted credit card in their wallet when traveling abroad. In addition, it is good practice to have credit cards from different companies in your wallet, so that if one credit card is declined, you can use another credit card to pay instead.

Conclusion

While there are many credit card companies to choose from, it’s important to do some research before you choose. For example, if you travel a lot, it’ll be best to own a Mastercard or Visa credit card due to the wide acceptance around the world. Similarly, you should check online to see if your credit card is accepted at certain stores. Above all, it’s important to keep multiple credit cards on hand in case one credit card is declined.
